Extra Leeds clues

None of the three jars I released in Leeds back in May have been reported. Are they still there? Who wants to go on a Jar Hunt to find out?

Jar No 126
I have a soft spot for Jar No 126, so I’m sad that it’s never been reported.

Jar No 127 was released in Chapel Allerton, near this very special bakery.

Even if you don’t find a jar, you should pop in for a cake!

As usual, I have no idea if any of these jars are still in place, so I can’t promise you a jar but the walking and hunting is fun.

Comments:

It was such a relief to do a Jar Walk whilst it was still light. I’d almost forgotten how it felt.

I’ve been going through a rotten patch with my illness lately but I think – fingers crossed – that I’m slowly coming out of it. My strength is improving and I managed to walk a bit further last night than I have in weeks.

Hopefully I’ll soon have enough energy to make extra jars. It’s all been very ‘skin of my teeth’ for weeks and I don’t enjoy that, it makes the project much more stressful.

Honestly, if I wasn’t such a stubborn person, I’d probably have given up over the last month. But once you’re past a certain point with a project like this, it takes on a momentum of its own and giving up becomes almost inconceivable. Of course, I know it’s theoretically possible for me to give up but things would have to be utterly unbearable for me to do that.

Help the project

This project has effectively become my full time job this year. If you value what I do, please donate or adopt a jar to help sustain the project.

Many jars

Theo’s mum kindly let me know that they are planning to re-release some of their jars for The Big Jar Adventure. However, apparently deciding which jars to give away involves UN levels of negotiation because everyone in their six-person family has different favourites. Good luck deciding, you guys.

In the meantime, they keep finding jars…

Jar No 203

Jar No 203 was an easy one but I just couldn’t resist placing the gold next to the beautiful purple clematis flowers.

I’ve seen or collected a jar: Collected a jar

Number on lid of jar: 203

Your name (optional): Theo’s little brother Max

Date jar found (optional): 23rd June

If you collected a jar, what motivated you to pick it up? (optional):
I was with Theo and Milly and Mummy, we were walking through the
village and as we turned a corner I spotted a jar! Mummy had to reach
for it – it was up high (she nearly couldn’t reach it either). Theo
spotted it at almost the same time as me and we both shouted “Jar!”
Mummy said this was really well spotted as there wasn’t even a clue to
look out for yet!

Where is the jar now? (optional): In the kitchen, it will probably
head for the mantelpiece later.

Theo’s Dad had a good jar day on the 18th – he found two sequential jars.

Date jar found (optional): 18/07/11

If you collected a jar, what motivated you to pick it up? (optional):
I was walking the dogs and just saw it! Love the oil ‘rainbow’.

Where is the jar now? (optional): Snuggled with the others

If you collected a jar, what motivated you to pick it up? (optional):
After the success of 197 I had a look at your flikr pics and thought I
knew where that one was as well, and there it was. I really love this
one, it looks like an insect floating upside down in water. Well
that’s what I see!

Even more jars

The family also found Jar No 176, Jar No 184 & Jar No 187 back on July 10th.

Jar No 187 had a particularly exciting adventure after it was spotted by Theo’s mum at a rather inopportune moment…

“Milly & I were on our way to the Downs to run the Race for Life when we spotted this jar, 187. I recognised the railings and we were hoping that Theo and his dad and brothers would turn up to cheer us on early in the race. In which case I would have handed them the jar. Sadly they didn’t see us until we’d finished! So jar 187 ran the Race for Life with me! All the way! Milly ran non stop in 35 minutes which I think is brilliant as she is nine years old.”

Look, my jar not only ran a race, it even got a medal!

This project cracks me up sometimes.

Comments:

Someone asked me on Twitter how I avoid repeating myself.

In truth, I do repeat forms and ideas on the project, as you can see over on the Flick set. Sometimes this is from lack of inspiration but often it’s because I’m trying to figure out an idea and I’m trying variations until I feel I’ve cracked it.

I’ve made several jars exploring this ‘paper yarn through paper’ technique but with this one, I finally felt satisfied. There is something pleasing and ‘right’ about the shadows cast by the paper yarn and the way the jar itself reflects extra patterns onto the card.
