Three finds & a possible destruction

Jar No 217

Jar No 217
Kirsty Hall: Jar No 217, August 2011

I’ve seen or collected a jar: Collected a jar

Number on lid of jar: 217

Your name (optional): zack parker

Date jar found (optional): 06/08/11

If you collected a jar, what motivated you to pick it up? (optional):
it was there

Where is the jar now? (optional): in the recycling

Oh dear, I do hope Jar No 217 didn’t end up in the recycling. Zack did send me an earlier form where he said it was in his house so perhaps it’s still in existence.

Of course I realise that some of the jars probably do get destroyed but it’s still sad to think of it happening, especially since I put such a huge effort into the jars and they are so valued by the people who hunt them.

May I just gently remind people that if they find a jar that they don’t want or it’s in a spot that’s annoying them, they can very easily re-release it to be found by someone else. You don’t even need to inform me about it, just leave it where it is or move it to a new spot.

If you’re worried about litter, please know that none of the jars will stay outside forever. Most are found within in a month and if any aren’t claimed by the end of the year, I’ll release the actual locations and one of my Jar Fans will undoubtedly go dashing out to find them.

Number on lid of jar: 161

Your name (optional): Nikki

Date jar found (optional): About a week ago!

If you collected a jar, what motivated you to pick it up? (optional):
I had hunted for this for ages and was looking in completely the wrong
place! Found this completely by accident, something in my memory
clicked when I saw the brickwork it was on! As a photographer I am
delighted I’ve found a photographic jar!

Where is the jar now? (optional): With Jar no 164 on my mantlepiece

I’m delighted that the Cheltenham jar has finally been found, well done to Nikki for such dedicated searching.

Three older jars

It’s always exciting when older jars are found. This project consumes so much of my time and energy that it’s always a big relief when I don’t have to squeeze in extras like checking up on jars.

Jar No 112

Jar No 112
Kirsty Hall: Jar No 112, April 2011

Amazingly Jar No 112 had been out in the wild since the 22nd of April. I’d no idea it was still out there, so well done to Ella for finally finding it nearly three months later.

Jar No 164 was the one that Richard released in Gloucester as part of the Big Jar Adventure. As far as I know, it’s also the first jar to be found by a dog!

Comments:

I was over in Stokes Croft yesterday meeting up with Christine, the current curator at The Here Gallery. We had lunch and cups of tea in the lovely Cafe Kino and talked about art, curating, the Bristol art scene and the history of the Here Shop and Gallery, where I also used to curate. I really enjoyed meeting Christine and hearing about her plans for the gallery and it was very nourishing to get away from my personal stuff for an afternoon.

If you’re in Bristol and you don’t know about the Here Gallery, I recommend checking it out since both the shop and the gallery are very interesting spaces. And they could do with your custom at the moment since sadly they had one of their windows broken during the riots this week.

They’re also an inspiring example of a small enterprise which started out as a volunteer, artist-run project and gradually evolved into a more sustainable business. Dan Thompson from the amazing Empty Shops Network will be interested to hear that they started out as an empty shop project about 8 years ago and are still going.

Whilst Jar Walking back through Cotham after the meeting, I spotted this rather charming graffiti and immediately thought of my friend Camilla, who was one of the founders of the Here Gallery and who has a great love for the Moomins.

How appropriate!

Adopt-A-Jar

Hooray, someone bought a jar adoption today, this was very much appreciated as money is tight at the moment with the house move coming up. If you’d like to support the project, you can choose to donate the amount of your choice or buy a Jar Adoption package, which even come with easy payment options.
